Raw energy contrasts with calm passages and fluid marks amidst subtle color shifts, referencing the subconscious, outside of literal meanings. Cold wax is my partner surprising me with its varying nature and allowing me to access subtle shifts and bold distinctions. After years of teaching art to children I have absorbed their immediacy of material and of working in the moment.
My canvas is a place of sanctuary, a place to slow down to listen to the conversation of colors and textures and subtle variations. Stopping to actually see the essence of this color or shape next to that one creates the visual equivalent of umami; a savory flavor created from the perfect blend of bold vs. subtle, messy vs. neat, quiet vs. loud, transparent vs. opaque, fast vs. slow, and bright vs dull. As I intuitively build layers and pare them back down, colors consort and negotiate for space, creating joyful energetic compositions.
